One of our most favorite accessible paths located on the far east end of Duluth’s Lakewalk is Brighton Beach. The park itself is named Kitchi Gammi Park and was originally established to ensure public access to Lake Superior. This entire beach is covered in rocks and pebbles of all shapes and sizes making it a destination you could make a quick stop or easily spend hours enjoying. During wilder weather days it’s a great place to observe the waves that Lake Superior can produce. You can never go wrong exploring here. As a fun fact, the park was first developed as a campground for auto tourists in 1922. The park currently doesn’t allow vehicle traffic and is only accessible via the Lakewalk. #duluthmn #duluthminnesota #exploreminnesota

A friend of mine I sent pictures of the incredible northern lights display from this past weekend said, “Isn’t it incredible people can travel thousands of miles to see aurora and yet here we are with it in our own backyard? Since it’s not even noon and everyone I know it’s talking about heading north tonight for the potential of the big aurora storm, we had to share one of our favorite state parks less than a 2 hour drive from Zenith Basecamp (and just 10 miles south of Grand Marais!). Cascade River State Park is a perfect overnight stop or day trip offering spectacular waterfalls surrounded by the perks of the North Shore. You can hike up the hills of birch and spruce forests for scenic overlooks of our great lake. Fly fishing is popular on the Cascade River. The Cascades (five falls) are the main draw and the inspo for this state park. There are drive-in and backpack campsites available for travelers. One of my favorite hikes (Lookout Mountain) is a popular looped trail that leads to an overlook with an excellent view of Lake Superior, the Cascade River Valley, and the Sawtooth Mountain Range. Pro tip: there is a campsite that sits at the top of Lookout Mountain. This site is just steps from the overlook and sunsets here are spectacular. But as all gems do, this one gets reserved insanely fast so may your odds ever be in your favor. Extend your adventure from Basecamp at Cascade River State Park! #northshoremn #minnesota #glamping

Just a 6 minute drive or 2.4 mile hike away from Zenith Basecamp lies one of the Top 5 views for sunrise and the harbor at Enger Tower Park. Enger Park rests above Duluth’s West End on a site once called Grand Mountain with hiking trails, picnic tables, BBQ grills and more. From May until late fall you can climb up the 5 stories of the tower and see a 360 view of Duluth’s unique skyline and Lake Superior. Location is the largest factor I build my travels around when visiting new places. From researching opportunities within walking distance to where I am sleeping for things like dining, coffee shops, adventure and more, the place you choose to call your home base while on the road is the key decision that will affect your experience. We all have those friends that plan the entirety of your day trips while traveling with the rest of us being the “Venmo friends”. Here’s one day trip itinerary in/near Duluth to help your traveling pack out this summer when you visit our city so you can spend more time adventuring and less time planning: Stop 1: Sunrise at the pier/Aerial Lift Bridge. You might even get lucky enough to see some freighters rolling in or out. Stop 2: Yummy latte and breakfast at Dovetail Cafe & Marketplace. Grab some Almanac Coffee for your future caffeine needs and shop handmade goods. Stop 3: Quick drive up to Gooseberry Falls State Park. Pack a lunch and beverages in one of our coolers provided for hostel guests. Pack out your trash. Go early and avoid the crowds. Stop 4: Hike Day Hill trail near Split Rock Lighthouse (pup friendly) and hunt for sea treasures on Split Rock Beach. Stop 5: Rustic Inn *pie stop* pro tip: order ahead and bring it to go if you don’t want to wait during their busy summer months. Stop 6: Sunday market (plan accordingly) and live music at Wild State Cider Stop 7: Take a Vista Fleet Sightseeing tour. Or one of the other unique specialty tours they have. Stop 8: Pizza, games, and fun beer options at Ursa Minor Brewing where I am quite certain you can find a beverage for anyone and everyone. Stop 9: Relax and recharge at Basecamp! 5 THINGS TO DO ON YOUR DULUTH VISIT: SUNRISE ALONG THE LAKE WALK ☼ Pick a spot, any spot. This path consists of almost 8 miles of paved pedestrian and bicycle trail stretching from Bayfront Park to Brighton Beach (Kitchi Gammi Park), much of it along the Lake Superior Shore. Grab a coffee and enjoy the view! WALK HISTORIC NORTH PIER AND LIFT BRIDGE ☼ Watch and wave to some of the coolest freighters in the industry or the local sail boats taking on Lake Superior from this stretch of Duluth history. You can also walk across the Aerial Lift Bridge and stand directly above the shipping canal (not while ships pass through). DINNER & DULUTHISH DRINKS @burger.paradox ☼ More than likely the first place I recommend to people with it being within walking distance of our business and the fact that everything I have eaten and sipped on there has been delicious. Gluten free/vegetarian options available. The spiked milkshakes are top notch, too. HIKE AT HARTLEY PARK @hartleynature ☼ Duluth has a long list of options when it comes to great hiking but Hartley has at all in one with the option to rent XC skis, fat tire bikes or kick sleds, fishing, plus nature center with exhibits. Winter events are on their website and be sure to get there early if you are renting equipment since its first come first serve. BLOW GLASS AT @lsartglass ☼Classes for kids and adults available to book online. I’ve done the pendant class and it is a fun intro to glass blowing and a chance to take a souvenir YOU MADE home with you. Here is some of our best pieces of advice we will give our friends traveling to Duluth! 1. Staying in the Lincoln Park Craft District eliminates the need for uber or a rental car. You can walk to dozens of restaurants, coffee shops, taprooms and more just by staying in this neighborhood. Scooter and e-bike rentals fill the neighborhood in the summer. We’re even near the Superior Hiking Trail and a short walk to Canal Park for additional shopping, dining and experiences. 2. Layers are non negotiable. Sure, you can come adventure any time of the year here.. but bringing different layers will make your exploring much more comfortable in a city we can never predict the weather or wind on point. That and it can easily be a 20 degree difference from the lake to the top of the hill. So plan ahead! 3. We have some of the best sunrise views on the horizon in our city. Don’t miss one of the best (and free) experiences DLH has to offer! 4. From northern lights hunting, wild ice skating, skiing, mountain biking, paddle boarding and more there is truly no bad season to visit. Embrace the sea smoke filled mornings by the ice or end your day on the lake in the summer. You can’t go wrong with any months you visit, as long as you bring layers. 5. It’s Aspen and Maple forests are rich with fall hues within the next few weeks - probably one of my favorite locations to wander with a hot seasonal latte and count the things we have to be thankful for in this city. A perfect length hike for many hikers that offer many view points of the skyline tucked underneath. This loop is located in West Duluth just above Skyline Parkway, just a few minutes from our building. The hike is a part of the Superior Hiking Trail that also has many mountain biking routes nearby. Trailhead: From the small parking lot on the east side of 40th Ave W/Haines Rd, follow the sidewalk/trail north it will veer down below the road. Cross the roadway through the SHT tunnel and follow the blue markings/signs along the trail. #duluthloveslocal #duluthmn #superiorhikingtrail

Have you spied the relic on our building from when Duluth Street Railway Co used to operate from this very spot in the very early 1900’s? Our Basecamp building has an abundance of history held within its walls. The company was incorporated in 1881, but didn’t move into this location until later on. We have photographs dating back to 1913 of the crew in front of our future Basecamp.
